Poem: Universal Sound

It's been so long since I've sat in a holler, or stood in the midst of the mountain, and just listened. Listened to my heartbeat and my breathing. If you're quiet enough in the hills you can hear the wind quietly move the trees as they move with the slightest of ease. You can hear the animals start to softly move in the dirt. Focus just enough and you can hear the rhythm of the woods and the earth.

The universal sound. If you ever sit and watch the river or listen to the bubble of a creek in the hills. You can hear the water move over the rocks or move with life as fish move upstream with the current. The river water lapping on the banks of dark and muddy earth as black as midnight. Water gives and takes life. It is beautiful and destructive at the same time. A dual natured beauty of rushing currents. As it flows you can hear it. The universal sound.

The sun gives light and you can feel it on your skin in your bones. It can provide warmth or burn the flesh. But many still pray for it. In the darkness people pray for light to come. So it can bless the earth with its gift to grow the land. It makes the dark earth become green. The soil hums with life. It radiates the universal sound.

The blood runs through deep and sweet crimson in my veins. Every pump of my heart makes it course through my body. As my lungs expand and contract with the breath I take. In and out as step with my feet. My bones moving as I move. My body is one with it all. The water, air, sky, and sun. I am part of the universal sound.
